Skills at Net

Heavier movers that's game is predicated on using intensity in their footwork to generate spin and power will struggle with this vital art-form involved as part of grass court tennis. They lack the finesse and grace in their movement for this surface.

It is by far the most optimal way to move on a grass-court and by mastering it's art, players are able to move to where the ball will be instead of chasing it, giving them a significant advantage in rallies. They are able to stay low and keep their centre of gravity under-control, which is essential for maintaining balance when moving on an uneven surface like grass. Keep an eye out for this.

Strong Low Centre of Gravity

The faster pace of the grass makes it essential for players to be working with a solid core base in order to react quickly and generate power when hitting the ball. Since the surface can be slippery, adopting a wider feet stance when setting up for a shot is essential. The fast, skiddy nature of the surface provides a hindrance to these types of players as the ball skids and bounces less than on other surfaces like clay or hard courts. This requires players to have good control and precision to keep the ball in play and be able to adapt quickly to the low and unpredictable bounce of the ball. So, not only is generating spin and power using explosive footwork impractical due to the slippage, but you just simply don't have enough time. This is a major reason why Nadal has often fallen short from making the second week of Wimbledon.

So since grass courts can be a challenging surface for players who rely heavily on power and spin to win matches, players must be willing to adapt their game and play with more precision, finesse and grace to succeed on grass. Particularly if the rally is going long or in return games.

Be aware of players that rely on high intensity to win their matches on hard and clay courts, as they may struggle more than most.

Disclaimer: This doesn't mean you don't need any intensity in your footwork, but it must be combined with being light and nimble in your feet at the necessary times to allow you to make quick and smooth movements, so that you can make accurate shots while properly handling the uneven grass.

Slice-Serves:

The slice serve is probably the most effective type of serve on grass courts, as the slice, if hit well, can cause the ball to skid through at a very low height, making it extremely challenging for opponents to get underneath the ball and generate the necessary power and/or spin to get it back.

Look for those that can handle sudden shifts in the momentum or an opponent's sudden change in strategy to go to slice more or become far more aggressive. Players with a strong mental game are more likely to stay positively focused on a winning strategy and not get rattled by the adversity that may arise from their opponent's change in strategy or level of play.

Risk-Reward Analysis

On grass courts, there is a higher degree of redundancy, which means players are willing to take more risks to get ahead in the match. Also look for skilled players that can change up their shots mid-rally, exhibiting the ability to calculate the real-time risk of taking a chance versus maintaining stability and consistency throughout the rally. Those players that are used to playing with a fixed one pace rhythm, will struggle on this surface more than any other.

Eastern Forehand grip

The grip used in tennis can alter the shot's delivery speed, spin, and control. On grass, a player's grip has even more of a significant impact on the trajectory of the ball itself. Players with an Eastern grip tend to have flatter and harder shots that penetrate through the air, while semi-western and full-western grips tend to have a more controlled and precise delivery of top-spin. The Eastern grip suits the grass far more, as the swing path is more naturally linear and in-line with the balls flight on a grass-court. Eastern grip players tend to prefer to hit the ball at hip height and so look out for this, on the forehand. Players with a semi or full western forehand may struggle a little more at handling slice shots, which are particularly effective on grass courts. Especially full western.

Taking the ball early:

Taking the ball early in grass court tennis is crucial due to the fast and low-bouncing nature of the surface. It helps reduce errors on the surface, as when the player hits the ball earlier, they have more time to prepare for their shots, which means they can adjust better to the ball's speed, slice or spin. This increases their chances of hitting the ball cleanly and accurately, reducing the number of errors that they make. Obviously this strategy will mostly only work if the player has the timing and technique good enough to take the ball consistently early and so look for players that possess this natural hand-eye coordination and technique that lends itself to grass court tennis.

Additionally, if the player is able to consistently take the ball early, especially on a grass court, they can stay on the offensive, keeping their opponent on the defensive. It also reduces the time that the opponent has to react and position themselves for the return shot, increasing the chances of the opponent making an error.

It allows them to control the point by dictating the pace and direction of the ball. This keeps their opponent guessing and makes it harder for them to set up their own shots.

Natural grass court sense/feel:

While there are players who undoubtedly have the required skills to excel on this surface, there are also those who seem to have a natural affinity for it. These players are able to demonstrate an enhanced sense of timing, balance, touch and feel for the ball on grass courts, which can give them a major advantage over other players.
